THE PLACE OF CREATION

On my work table, thin wires are used to create individual parts that come together to form complex spatial sculptures.

Here we develop, sketch, solder, bend, wind, file, saw, glue, paint, experiment. The space is not large, but it is enough to create small and large dream worlds.

My inspiration is often based on forms from nature, structures that surround us every day, from architecture, fashion, the play of light and shadow, or from the material itself.

THE BEGINNING OF CREATION

My name is Anna Kaus. I was born in Chemnitz in 1982.

In 1999 I built my first lamp. The basis was the need to bring some light into an existing dark corner of the room. This first idea turned into an oversized cocoon made of peddigree cane and several layers of paper.

From then on, I knew I wanted to create more of them.

In 2003 I discovered wire as a suitable material for the basic framework of my objects. I tried out different wire thicknesses and set about recreating microscopic structures in grid-like formations.

The next works from 2007 onwards were mainly playful and abstracted miniatures, some of which I combined with tweezers and particularly fine soldering tips. As I was particularly fascinated by architectural models at the time, I used the architectural features of classical buildings with their towers and round arches in my miniatures.

I called these "castles in the air". (more about the miniatures)

In 2011, I started to present my work regularly at craft fairs. Around the same time, I increasingly found inspiration in the animal kingdom. Soon, the plant world also joined my repertoire as a source of ideas.

I increasingly refined my paper-covering technique. In the beginning, the papers I used were plain white to emphasise the contrasting black of the wire frame. Later, my coverings became more and more colourful - in reference to the lively abundance of nature.

I continued to implement these ideas in the form of more lampshades and to expand my knowledge of the necessary techniques to make practical use as easy as possible for my customers.

For example, my ceiling lamps are attached by means of magnets. Openings for changing bulbs are also fitted with small, strong magnets to allow easy access to the inside of the lamp.

THE FUTURE OF CREATION

I am self-taught. My goal is personal progress in my work and continuous learning. My thirst for knowledge to improve my expertise and the development of ever new creative expressions provide me with ongoing development and continuous self-improvement. (How I work)

The lightness and permeability of wire and paper continue to fascinate me.

But learning and discovering never stops.

After my creative career, I completed an additional apprenticeship as a carpenter. The interest in further craft techniques and the need not to stand still drove me on.

And now I continue to work with passion on the implementation of new ideas and the merging of my skills and sources of inspiration. The possibilities offered by creative craftsmanship are almost inexhaustible. (Customised projects)
